When you open this book you will become best friends with Miss Harriet Louise Ankeny. She was a precocious child born in 1844 who grew into a woman with unique ambitions for her time. She never married. She was always the devoted daughter of Joseph and Harriet Ankeny. She was known for hosting family parties and political events. She traveled throughout America and the world by horse and carriage, stage coach, train, steam ship and eventually motor car. She was patriotic, a DAR member, and an Iowa delegate to the national DAR convention in Washington, D.C.
She loved traveling but loved homecomings even more.
This book is fiction but based on the real lives on the Ankeny family. They were prominent and influential early Iowans. They lived adventurous, interesting and successful lives as settlers, gold miners, civil war officers, entrepreneurs, elected officials, suffragettes, city founders and much more. The lives of Harriet's parents, brothers and sisters, and their families are chronicled and woven within interpretive story telling to create an entertaining and educational memorial to their legacy.
The relationships, feelings and beliefs have been developed to create an interesting story. The names, dates and places are real and over 200 end notes provide authenticity. The book is a combination of story telling, Ankeny family genealogy, and American history.

While researching the Ankeny family, an intriguing woman was discovered. Mary Bonnet Ankeny Hunter was the niece of Harriet Louise Ankeny. Mary was a suffragist and progressive thinker. She was instrumental in securing the Iowa Suffrage Memorial located at the Iowa State Capitol. She corresponded with Carrie Chapman Catt and other suffrage leaders. Those letters and her work for memorializing the suffrage movement in Iowa are documented in a biography of Mary and in an extensive appendix of transcribed documents. The two books can be purchased on Amazon.com.
